Evelyn and Alexander turned to Eleanor simultaneously.
Evelyn asked, "You know what's going on?"
Alexander pressed, "Grandmother, what exactly happened?"
Eleanor glanced around mysteriously and lowered her voice. "Does my granddaughter-in-law have multiple personalities? The primary personality usually suppresses the secondary one, so she doesn't remember anything afterward!"
Evelyn fell silent.
Alexander remained speechless.
Eleanor continued on her own. "That's how it always is in TV dramas! There's even this novel where the male lead has seven or eight personalities. The female lead essentially married several husbands. What a steal!"
Evelyn stayed quiet.
Alexander's lips twitched. "Grandmother, mind your dignity."
Eleanor hastily wiped her mouth and glared at him before turning to Evelyn. "Granddaughter-in-law, do you really have schizophrenia?"
Evelyn massaged her temples. "Really, I don't."
She underwent comprehensive physical exams every year, with particular attention to mental health.
Eleanor looked puzzled. "Then what else could it be?"
Evelyn shook her head.
Alexander took her hand. "Whatever the situation, you are my wife. We'll face whatever comes together."
Noticing Eleanor's tired expression, Evelyn changed the subject. "Grandmother, you should rest now."
Eleanor nodded and grasped Evelyn's hand. "You are legally married. You must live well together."
Evelyn agreed.
As they were about to leave, Eleanor suddenly pulled Evelyn back. She waved Alexander away. "You go out first. I have some private words for my granddaughter-in-law."
Alexander had no choice but to exit.
As the door closed, he faintly heard Eleanor ask, "Is that rascal decent in bed? If he's not, don't hide it from me…"
Alexander stood frozen outside.
Inside the room, Evelyn's cheeks flushed slightly.
Eleanor regained her composure and sighed softly. "Actually, I wanted to talk to you about Sophia Watson."
Evelyn's eyes flickered.
Eleanor spoke gravely. "Alexander appears cold but is warm-hearted. He has an overwhelming sense of responsibility. It's both a strength and a weakness."
She tightened her grip on Evelyn's hand. "When I arranged your marriage, I didn't know about Sophia Watson's existence. Now that you are husband and wife, Alexander would never let you down. As for Sophia Watson… you need to be careful."
Evelyn felt a warmth in her heart. "Thank you, Grandmother."
…
Evelyn and Alexander moved back to the main house.
Cecilia Evans tried to stay at the Vance residence but was firmly refused by Alexander.
Robert Vance and Richard Evans attempted to oppose, but Alexander remained resolute.
His previous compromise was due to the special medicine. Now that Evelyn had provided the medication, Alexander had no more reservations.
Richard Evans used the Truman family as leverage. "Cecilia is now engaged to the Trumans. She must be married from the Vance home!"
Alexander sneered. "If you can't bear to part with your daughter, we can divide the family. The Evans branch should have moved out long ago. Then you can welcome whoever you want home."
Richard Evans was instantly silenced.
Night fell, moonlight spilling down.
Evelyn walked slowly, still pondering the day's events.
She felt an invisible hand was manipulating her marriage to Alexander.
Her left hand was suddenly enveloped in a warm palm. Alexander asked softly, "What are you thinking about?"
Evelyn replied, "I'm thinking about who is scheming against us."
She had checked her schedule from the day they registered their marriage. She was working in the lab all day.
Who was that person who appeared at the Vance home and knew her secret?
Alexander also frowned.
Unable to figure it out, they decided to set it aside for now.
As they entered the courtyard, Alexander's phone rang.
A soft, feminine voice came through. "Alexander, can you come have dinner with me?"
Alexander's tone was cold. "I'm busy."
The voice turned tearful. "I'm sick again… I can't eat without you here… The doctor says my stomach will fail if I don't eat…"
Alexander was silent for a moment. "Wait for me."
Evelyn's heart sank.
She turned to leave, but Alexander grasped her wrist.
His gaze was intense. "Come with me?"
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
He wanted to make a clean break.
She nodded simply. "Alright."
The atmosphere in the car grew heavy.
Seeing Alexander's solemn expression, Evelyn spoke up. "What exactly is between you and Sophia Watson?"
