Evelyn Ross hesitated for a moment before speaking softly. "Grandma, was it you who arranged for my marriage certificate with Alexander Vance?"
Eleanor Vance took her hand and smiled affectionately. "How could that be? Do you really think the wealthy can control everything? Both parties must be present to get married!"
Evelyn grew even more confused but didn't press further, listening quietly as the elderly woman continued.
Eleanor hadn't been this clear-minded in years. She spoke slowly. "It was about two years ago, I can't remember the exact date. Alexander had just returned from studying abroad and had been home for a week."
"I woke up from my nap feeling disoriented and wanted to talk to him. Somehow I wandered out of the house and kept walking until I fell on the road. My legs were weak and my arm was injured. I tried to get up but couldn't. I struggled on the ground for a long time, asking several passersby for help... Ah, no one dared to help me up. I understand - people are afraid of being scammed by the elderly these days. That's when you appeared, dear! Do you remember?"
Evelyn suddenly recalled the incident.
She had always had an excellent memory. When she helped the elderly woman that day, many people had tried to dissuade her.
But Evelyn paid them no mind.
She asked someone to record a video as evidence before approaching to help the woman up.
Discovering the woman's leg injury, she carried her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Then came the dramatic turn.
After the nurse finished bandaging the injury, Evelyn prepared to leave, but the elderly woman grabbed her hand, refusing to let go.
Evelyn thought she had encountered one of those scam artists and frowned.
But the old woman's eyes shone brightly as she asked, "Good child, are you married?"
Evelyn shook her head.
The woman smiled. "I have a hopeless grandson. Would you consider making do with him?"
Evelyn was stunned.
"Good child, we're fated! You were born to be my granddaughter-in-law. Let me introduce you to my grandson? He's very handsome!"
Eleanor took out her phone to show a photo.
Evelyn glanced at it and felt both amused and exasperated. "Grandma, I'm not thinking about marriage yet!"
Eleanor looked genuinely disappointed. "Is that so... Well, if you ever want to marry but can't find the right person, come find me! My grandson says he'll never marry in this lifetime. It's so worrying."
Eleanor handed her a business card.
Evelyn didn't say much. Over the years, she had met many capable elderly people and learned numerous skills from them.
She knew well that older people often developed eccentric personalities.
Leaving the hospital, she placed the business card on a nearby trash can and walked away.
It was just a minor incident in an ordinary day, gradually fading from memory.
Only when Eleanor mentioned it today did she recall that day, superimposing the woman before her with the memory.
Evelyn exclaimed in surprise, "So that was you!"
"Yes, that's why I say we're fated, dear!" Eleanor chuckled and continued.
"I thought you really didn't want to get married and felt regretful for several days. Then on the fourth day, you suddenly called saying you'd changed your mind. I tricked that rascal into coming, and you two went to City Hall to get married!~"
Eleanor gave her a reproachful look. "After your marriage that day, you brought us home. You said you'd go back to pack your things and move in, leaving the marriage certificate with me for safekeeping. But you never returned... Dear, why didn't you come back to us? Did you change your mind?"
Evelyn's eyes widened in astonishment.
She had clearly thrown away the business card. How could she have gone back to find the old woman?
She asked seriously, "Are you sure the person who came to you later was really me?"
"It was you!"
Eleanor nodded emphatically. "Your marriage registration was completely proper. The photo was taken on the spot. Isn't that you in the marriage certificate photo?"
Evelyn's jaw tightened.
She suddenly looked at Alexander Vance, noticing his slight frown, as if this wasn't surprising to him.
Evelyn asked directly, "Mr. Vance, according to what Grandma says, you personally registered the marriage. How could you not remember later?"
Alexander gave a bitter smile, massaging his temples helplessly.
Before he could speak, Eleanor interjected. "Dear, that rascal has one weakness - he can't handle alcohol. One glass makes him drunk. But he's different when drunk. Outwardly he seems normal, but he becomes extremely obedient. He'll do whatever I tell him to!"
Eleanor said triumphantly, "So back then I tricked him into taking a sip. While he was muddled, I made him go with you to get registered!"
Evelyn: "..."
Since meeting Alexander, she had indeed never seen him drink alcohol.
She looked at Alexander again. The man sighed softly. "When Grandma first showed me the marriage certificate, I had my suspicions. It turns out I was right."
Alexander looked at his grandmother. "Grandma, you were too reckless. Fortunately it was Evelyn. If it had been someone else..."
The consequences would have been unthinkable!
Evelyn's cheeks flushed slightly. What did he mean by "fortunately it was Evelyn"?
Eleanor snorted. "I was dressed in rags that day. So many people passed by without helping. Only you came to my aid, showing your good heart. Did you think I would choose just anyone to be your wife?"
Eleanor teased, "You rascal, just admit it - are you satisfied or not?"
Alexander didn't speak, but his gaze softened as he looked at the girl.
He noticed Evelyn's serious expression, as if facing a great crisis.
Remembering their earlier conversation, he frowned slightly and asked quietly, "What's wrong? Is there a problem?"
"Of course there's a problem."
Evelyn looked grave as she met his eyes. "Because after helping Grandma that day, I never went to find her again! The person who registered the marriage with you wasn't me at all!"
Alexander's pupils contracted.
Eleanor also froze, then stated firmly, "Impossible! Dear, how could I mistake someone else for you?"
As if to prove her point, she hurriedly took out her phone. "Right, right! After you agreed to marry, while we were waiting for that rascal, you told me many things. You said your mother was Sophia Ashcroft, and even showed me a photo of you together..."
She produced that photoshopped group photo again.
When Eleanor had previously shown this photo, insisting Sophia was her mother, Evelyn had thought someone was playing a cruel trick on the old woman. Now that she and Sophia had been reunited...
This meant that the imposter had known all along that she was Sophia's biological daughter?!
Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine.
This was all too surreal, like a dream!
Eleanor suddenly understood something. "Now I know what happened!"
