Chapter 87

Evelyn Ross felt a cramping pain in her lower abdomen.

She endured the discomfort.

She grabbed Grace Lorenz's wrist.

"I need to use the restroom."

Grace held her arm.

She guided her into the restroom.

She waited quietly outside.

Her heart was uneasy.

She saw Evelyn's pale face.

Sweat beaded on her forehead.

Could it really be anemia?

In the visitation room of the detention center.

Linda Lowell sat down with a smile.

"Isabella, what brings you here?"

She added, "This place is unlucky. You shouldn't have come."

She was full of warmth.

Isabella Ashcroft gave a faint smile.

She appeared hesitant.

Linda immediately showed concern.

"What's wrong? You look so pale?"

Her face darkened. "Is it Evelyn again? Did she disrespect you?"

Isabella smiled bitterly.

"It's about Evelyn. Something happened."

Linda sneered.

"She was bound to get into trouble. Who did she offend this time?"

Her face showed glee.

Isabella paused.

She thought Linda was foolish.

She wore everything on her face.

She didn't know how to pretend.

Isabella wondered how the switch had succeeded all those years ago.

Isabella looked down.

"She killed someone. She's locked up at the police station."

"Good!" Linda was excited. "I hope she gets the death penalty! Then she won't upset you anymore!"

Isabella was silent.

She glanced at Linda with pity.

She cleared her throat.

"She killed Leo Lowell."

"I don't care who she— Who? Leo?! Did I hear that right?!"

Linda lunged across the table.

She was emotional.

He was her only brother.

Though a scoundrel, she doted on him.

Isabella sighed.

"It's not entirely Evelyn's fault. Leo demanded five million dollars. She refused. They struggled, and he fell. A steel rod pierced his chest… He died instantly. Don't be too upset, Linda. Evelyn is Dr. Nan. She has money, but five million is no small sum. It's normal she didn't want to pay."

Linda's eyes widened.

Her eyes turned red.

She stood up abruptly.

"That wretched girl! She killed Leo over five million?! I shouldn't have raised her! I should have drowned her at birth! Where is she? I'll beat her to death! I'll avenge Leo!"

She was too emotional.

The police immediately warned her.

After a while.

Linda calmed down slightly.

The anger in her eyes remained.

Isabella spoke.

"Linda, they were both your family. You had the right to know. Don't act impulsively."

Linda looked dazed.

Her eyes were red.

Tears rolled down.

"Don't worry, Isabella. I'm fine…"

Isabella nodded.

"Good. You should go back now. I'll go see Evelyn…"

"Why see her? A death row inmate! Waiting for execution!" Linda said viciously.

Isabella looked at her as if she were a fool.

"Linda, it was manslaughter. At most, she'll get ten years…"

"That's too lenient!"

Seeing she missed the point.

Isabella sighed.

"Linda, Evelyn didn't do it on purpose. She must be scared after killing someone. When you see her in detention, remember to comfort her."

Linda understood.

"She's held here too?"

Isabella nodded.

"Yes. Not sentenced yet. In a solitary cell. Probably in the same block as you."

Linda's eyes narrowed.

A vicious look appeared.

"Good."

Isabella stood up.

"Linda, time's up. I have to go."

Linda was reluctant.

"Isabella, get along well with Julian. Marry into the Vance family. Take good care of yourself. Don't worry about me…"

Isabella had already left the visitation room.

She didn't pay attention to those words.

She exited the visitation area.

She prepared to leave the police station.

She saw Grace Lorenz outside the restroom.

Grace looked anxious.

A policewoman asked.

"Forensic Specialist Lorenz, the suspect Evelyn Ross's lawyer is here again. He's asking about the bail review. Judging by her condition earlier, it might really be anemia. Should we approve or not?"

Grace frowned.

She looked worriedly at the restroom.

She thought Evelyn's weakness didn't seem fake.

She pressed her lips, about to say "approve."

Captain Durant walked over.

He heard the conversation.

He frowned. "Is she faking illness again?"

Grace retorted, "She's not faking."

Captain Durant sneered.

"Forensic Specialist Lorenz, have you forgotten how she fooled you last night? And you believe this! I remember you swore last night that if she got bail, you'd quit. Did you forget?"

Grace clenched her jaw.

"Captain Durant, she's really unwell…"

Captain Durant didn't believe it.

"How convenient. She feels unwell after just one day in custody. A delicate young lady can't handle hardship…"

Grace wanted to say more.

Isabella stepped forward.

"Excuse me, are you talking about my sister, Evelyn Ross?"

They looked at her.

Grace frowned. "Why are you here?"

Isabella looked nervous.

She pulled Grace aside.

"Forensic Specialist Lorenz, can we talk over here? It's about my sister's condition…"

Grace looked serious.

She knew Isabella was Evelyn's sister.

In middle school, after learning the truth about her background, Isabella became clever.

She stopped bullying Evelyn at school.

So Grace didn't know the sisters had a bad relationship.

She followed Isabella to the side.

She looked concerned.

"What's really wrong with Evelyn Ross?"

Isabella sighed.

"Probably her period. She's always unwell at this time every month. You know, women's problems."

Grace relaxed.

It was good Evelyn wasn't seriously ill.

But then.

Isabella held her hand.

"Grace, we were middle school classmates, right? Please help Evelyn. Can you approve the bail?"

Grace's face darkened instantly.

Isabella pretended not to notice.

She continued.

"Girls often look pale during their period. It can seem like anemia. For the sake of our past friendship, please sign. We promise she won't leave…"

Grace shook off her hand violently.

"Dream on! This is a law enforcement agency, not a place for bargaining!"

She glanced sharply at the restroom.

Then she looked at Captain Durant.

"She doesn't qualify for bail. Send her back to detention immediately!"

Captain Durant was satisfied.

"Glad you came to your senses."

Grace didn't want to stay.

She strode upstairs to the forensics department.

Evelyn walked out of the restroom, her face pale.

The policewoman stood there with her hands behind her back.

She sneered.

"Miss Ross, it's just your period. We're all women here. Stop pretending! Go back. Wait for the next interrogation!"

Evelyn's legs felt weak.

She was urged back to the solitary cell.

The moment she entered.

Everything went black.

She fainted and collapsed on the floor.

Upstairs.

Grace grew angrier the more she thought about it.

Evelyn's pale face flashed in her mind.

She couldn't harden her heart completely.

She took out a thermos.

She poured some ginger tea and headed to the detention center.
