Chapter 4

Granddaughter-in-law!

The old lady strained to remember.

"He's called... Vance... Vance something..."

The name was on the tip of her tongue, but she just couldn't get it out.

The elderly woman grew frustrated, slapping her thigh in agitation.

Evelyn Ross spoke softly to soothe her.

"Don't rush. Take your time."

She took out her phone and dialed a number.

At that exact moment, on a nearby street.

The atmosphere inside the Bentley was oppressive.

Alexander Vance's face was like dark water.

Thomas Watson reported nervously, "Mrs. Vance gave the bodyguards the slip and ran off by herself..."

A chill emanated from the man.

Surveillance showed the elderly woman had taken a bus to the suburbs.

This area had sparse camera coverage, making the search difficult.

The abrupt ring of a phone broke the silence.

Alexander pressed the answer button.

A lazy female voice came through the receiver. "Hello. Your elderly relative is with me."

The temperature in the car seemed to drop instantly.

Thomas immediately began tracing the signal source.

Alexander's voice was icy. "Name your price."

"...Just kidding," the girl said cheerfully. "Remember to keep a better eye on her."

She gave an address and hung up.

Thomas let out a long sigh of relief.

That good Samaritan really knew how to joke!

A flicker of recognition passed through Alexander's eyes.

That voice... where had he heard it before?

Five minutes later, they arrived at the location.

They found the old lady waiting with a police officer.

Alexander stepped forward. "Grandmother, what are you doing all the way out here?"

The old woman whispered mysteriously, "Looking for my granddaughter-in-law! She lives around here!"

Alexander sighed helplessly. "You're confused again..."

"I really saw her!" the old lady complained. "That girl handed me over to the police and slipped away... Let me borrow your phone."

She took the phone and carefully noted down the number that had just called.

Her little notebook finally had the granddaughter-in-law's contact information!

Evelyn hated dealing with grateful scenes.

Seeing a patrol officer, she promptly handed over the elderly woman and left.

Early the next morning, her advisor called, urging her to come in.

Evelyn rode her scooter to the university.

Inside Professor Lowell's office, Isabella Ashcroft and Linda Lowell were already waiting.

Evelyn narrowed her peach-blossom eyes.

She and Isabella attended the same university but had vastly different experiences.

Isabella had gloriously tested into San Francisco University.

Evelyn had deliberately scored low to enter the obscure Energy and Power Engineering major, aiming to manage her company.

Then, new energy suddenly became a hot field.

Isabella immediately transferred departments, becoming her classmate once again.

Linda's presence was a surprise.

Professor Lowell looked grave. "Evelyn, your guaranteed graduate admission has been revoked."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "On what grounds?"

"Your mother reported you for misconduct," Professor Lowell said, frowning. "Quickly apologize to your mother. Don't ruin your future!"

Isabella spoke up gently. "Professor Lowell, Mom only wants what's best for Evelyn."

She turned to Evelyn. "You offended Mr. Vance. He said he wants you to disappear from San Francisco."

Evelyn was taken aback.

Alexander didn't seem the petty type.

Isabella, however... was an expert at spinning tales.

Isabella held out a plane ticket. "Dad wants you to lay low in Argentina."

Evelyn glanced at the destination.

The other side of the planet.

The Ashcrofts were clearly afraid she might return.

She pushed the ticket away. "Not necessary."

Isabella then produced a bank card. "This fifty thousand is what I've saved. You can use it for now..."

Linda snatched the card back. "Isabella, are you stupid? The Ashcrofts paying for the ticket is already more than enough!"

She commanded Evelyn, "Withdraw from school and go abroad immediately!"

Evelyn met her gaze coldly. "What gives you the right to decide for me?"

"The fact that I'm your mother! Do you think you can even graduate? Getting a job and earning money is what you should be doing!"

Professor Lowell quickly interjected, "Mrs. Lowell, you're mistaken! Evelyn's performance in her major is exceptional..."

Linda cut him off directly. "Professor, don't cover for her! The only reason she wants a graduate degree is to compete with Isabella! She should look in the mirror and see if she's even worthy!"

The crude language left the professor speechless.

Isabella smiled, smoothing things over. "I was admitted through a special recruitment channel."

Professor Lowell was curious. "Which professor recruited you specially?"

Isabella pretended to be modest. "It was Dr. Nan. He just patented a new hydrogen fuel."

Evelyn's head snapped up. "You said who?"
