Chapter 33

William Ashcroft halted mid-step.

He exchanged a look with Nancy.

Their expressions were filled with shock and suspicion.

They rushed into the hospital room.

A typical symptom of nervous cough is worsening at night.

Nancy flipped the switch.

The lights came on.

Sophia Ashcroft was half-propped against the headboard, covering her mouth as she coughed violently.

Her face was flushed, and she was breathing rapidly.

Her thin frame trembled with each cough, a heartbreaking sight.

William held her shoulders. "Sophia, how are you feeling?"

"It's the medicine... cough..." she managed with difficulty.

William looked confused.

But Nancy understood instantly and dashed out of the room.

She returned with the bottle Evelyn had given her. "Ma'am, the medicine is here!"

Sophia nodded.

Nancy hurriedly shook out a pill and was about to hand it over when Isabella stopped her.

Isabella frowned deeply. "Mom's cough suddenly got worse. What if it's because of this medicine? We shouldn't risk giving her something of unknown origin..."

Her intuition told her the medicine might work.

She couldn't let that happen.

She looked at William.

When someone is biased against another, everything that person does is wrong.

Evelyn was Linda's daughter. That was William's biggest bias.

William flew into a rage. "Evelyn is truly useless! I always said she couldn't be trusted. After all your kindness, Sophia, she tries to harm you with medicine!"

Isabella secretly rejoiced.

But Sophia, between coughs, reached out to Nancy. "Give me the pill! Cough..."

Nancy, loyal to her mistress, immediately handed over the pill.

Sophia quickly swallowed it...

"Sophia!"

William cried out, trying to stop her, but was astonished to find—Sophia's coughing had stopped!

She caught her breath, exhaled deeply, and stated with certainty, "Evelyn's medicine worked."

"..."

After Sophia fell into a peaceful sleep, they moved to the outer room.

Isabella was pale, biting her lip. "Dad, could Evelyn really have gotten the special medicine?"

"She doesn't have that kind of connections. Mr. Vance must have gotten it for her."

William frowned. "It seems Old Mrs. Vance really values her..."

Isabella immediately clenched her fingers.

...

Inside the VIP suite.

"What did you have for lunch today?"

The little old lady thought hard. "Porridge? No... noodles! Right, you brat?"

Alexander Vance smiled and nodded. "Right."

The little old lady said triumphantly, "See? My mind is perfectly sharp!"

Alexander remained silent.

A closer look would reveal his smile didn't reach his eyes.

They had actually had rice for lunch. Grandma was misremembering again.

Her condition seemed to be worsening. Her memory was starting to fail...

Then Evelyn spoke lazily from her spot. "Grandma, what color was Mr. Vance's tie yesterday?"

The little old lady answered immediately. "Purple! The brat is so particular. He even matched it with diamond cufflinks."

"And the day before?"

"Blue! I bought him that blue tie myself~"

Evelyn smiled faintly, giving Alexander a meaningful look. "Grandma remembers things she cares about very clearly."

Alexander looked up at her.

The girl was sunk deep into a beanbag chair, looking completely relaxed.

She was fiddling with her phone, her dark hair cascading loosely, making her skin appear even paler. She seemed bathed in a soft light.

Her words just now were meant to comfort him.

His anxious heart gradually calmed...

The little old lady suddenly laughed. "Granddaughter-in-law, was I right about everything?"

Evelyn said, "Yes."

The little old lady looked at Alexander. "Brat, see? Your wife remembers what you wear every day so clearly! You're on her mind!"

Evelyn:!!

She just had a photographic memory, it wasn't intentional!

She wanted to explain, but saw Alexander staring at his computer, seemingly uninterested.

He probably didn't take Grandma's words seriously.

No need to explain then, might make it worse.

Evelyn didn't notice the slight reddening of the man's ears. She turned her attention back to her work on the phone.

The Alzheimer's project had hit a bottleneck in its final stages. She had no leads.

She stood up. "I'm going out for a walk."

While walking her Shiba Inu "Kitten" downstairs, someone tapped her shoulder.

Turning around, she saw a sleazy-looking middle-aged man grinning at her. "Long time no see, my dear niece!"

Evelyn's face instantly turned cold.

This was Linda's brother, her uncle Leo Lowell.

He was idle and addicted to gambling.

When he spoke, a foul smell emanated from his mouth. His yellowed teeth were disgusting.

Evelyn took a step back. "What are you doing here?"

Leo rubbed his hands together, leering. "Heard my dear niece has hooked the Vance family? Uncle's a bit short on cash lately. Could you lend me some?"

Evelyn scoffed.

Linda was a classic enabler. She clung to the Ashcrofts, giving all her living expenses to this brother.

After Evelyn left the Ashcroft home, Leo had shamelessly come to her for money multiple times.

Only after seeing she "truly had no money" did he finally stop.

Now he was back...

Evelyn said calmly, "I don't have any money."

Leo didn't believe her. "You're taking such good care of that old lady. Didn't she give you any money?"

Evelyn narrowed her eyes. "She hasn't given me any yet. Maybe she will later."

Leo immediately smiled. "You must lend some to Uncle then. If you give me enough, I might even tell you a secret!"

"Fine."

Leo didn't dare cause trouble here. The VIP suites housed the wealthy and powerful. Security guards patrolled nearby. He chuckled and left.

Evelyn snorted dismissively.

Just then, her phone rang. It was Sophia calling.

She answered immediately.

...

Isabella paced anxiously in her room.

Her standing in the Vance family depended entirely on Dr. Nan!

But a whole day had passed, and Dr. Nan hadn't replied to Sophia's message!

Julian had sent several more WhatsApp messages, constantly asking about Dr. Nan. She couldn't delay any longer...

Isabella suddenly stopped pacing and quietly entered the hospital room.

She took the phone from the sleeping Sophia's side and went out into the hallway.

Taking a deep breath, she opened the contacts, found "Little Nan," and directly dialed the number!

The phone rang three times before it was answered.

A cool voice came through. "Hello, Mrs. Ashcroft, is something wrong?"

Isabella froze upon hearing the voice. This voice...

"Evelyn?!"
