Chapter 256

Recognition!

Mr. Valentine's gaze swept past her.

It finally settled on the ice coffin.

He studied Evelyn Ross with hesitation.

His brow furrowed slightly.

Evelyn still didn't know his identity. "Handsome Uncle, what's wrong?"

Mr. Valentine's expression was grave.

They had agreed to have dinner together.

Then Sophia Ashcroft suddenly appeared.

She said her daughter had been kidnapped and was drifting at sea.

He immediately mobilized all his personnel in San Francisco.

He even called for reinforcements from New York.

They searched the ocean day and night.

Finally, they retrieved a swollen corpse.

The body was unrecognizable.

Sophia denied it was her daughter after just one glance.

The police conducted a DNA test.

It confirmed the deceased's identity.

Sophia fainted on the spot.

She still hasn't woken up.

William Ashcroft has been by her side ever since.

He came today on Sophia's behalf to pay his respects.

He couldn't let the child leave this world alone.

He never expected to meet his young friend here.

He looked at Mrs. Vance. "You know Mrs. Vance?"

Evelyn lowered her eyes. "I was her high school classmate."

Mr. Valentine nodded. "I'm sorry for standing you up that day."

Evelyn's throat tightened. "I had something come up that day too."

A matter of life and death.

Mr. Valentine saw her pained expression. "Since you know Mrs. Vance, do you know Mrs. Ashcroft?"

Evelyn was taken aback. "Why?"

Mr. Valentine sighed. "She's not doing well. You should go see her."

Evelyn grew anxious. "What's wrong with Mrs. Ashcroft?"

Mr. Valentine nodded.

Evelyn immediately said, "I'll go right now!"

She turned to leave.

Zack Davis grabbed her arm. "Grace, don't run off!"

Evelyn frowned. "Mrs. Ashcroft isn't well. I'm going to visit her."

Zack's eyes lit up. "Finally coming to your senses? Making Mrs. Ashcroft happy will benefit the company!"

He hesitated. "But I'm not done here yet…"

All the industry big shots were here.

He couldn't bear to leave.

Evelyn said quickly, "You stay. I'll meet you at the hotel tonight."

"Alright."

Evelyn turned and left.

Zack was about to mingle.

A voice spoke up. "Is that your wife?"

Zack looked at Mr. Valentine.

Seeing his imposing presence, Zack smiled. "Yes, my wife Grace Nan. She was Mrs. Vance's high school classmate. They were very close. She came as soon as she heard the news."

Mr. Valentine caught it. "The surname Nan?"

Zack was startled. "Yes!"

Mr. Valentine frowned. "That's a rare surname."

"It certainly is…"

Mr. Valentine asked again, "Her father's surname is Nan?"

Zack became wary. "Who are you? Asking about private matters?"

Mr. Valentine extended his hand. "Valentine the Third."

Zack was stunned.

Then, ecstatic. "You're Mr. Valentine?! I didn't recognize you!"

Evelyn put on a mask as she left.

The driveway outside was congested.

There were too many mourners.

Everyone wanted to network.

Progress was slow.

The exit route was clear.

The entrance was completely blocked.

Ride-shares couldn't get in either.

Evelyn was anxious.

A car nearby could turn around and get out.

The car was very conspicuous.

James Klein's yellow sports car!

Evelyn walked over.

James was on the phone.

His eyes were red and swollen.

He had been crying hard.

"The boss is dead. I'm not in the mood for a meeting! The documents are important, but today is the funeral! Postpone all meetings!"

James rubbed his eyes.

He got out of the car, grumbling.

"These damn people, they're all just here for show! How many are genuinely mourning? Blocking the road so I can't get through!"

He yelled at Thomas Watson. "Why did you let everyone in? How many of these people are actually sincere?!"

Thomas sighed. "I know you're upset. I won't argue with you."

Evelyn got into the driver's seat.

She stepped on the gas and turned around.

The car changed lanes and exited the Vance estate.

James rushed over.

He got into the passenger seat.

He roared, "Who are you? Stealing my car?!"

Evelyn ignored him.

She drove toward the hospital.

James cried and cursed. "Unlucky! My boss dies and I lose my car? Car thief, pull over! I'm not in the mood to deal with this today…"

"Wahhh, my poor boss! Couldn't you pick someone else to steal from, car thief? I have no conscience? I'm the only one here sincerely mourning!"

Evelyn: "...Shut up!"

The familiar voice made James shut up.

The next moment, he cried even harder. "Your voice sounds just like the boss! If the boss were alive, she wouldn't let you make her angry…"

Evelyn took off her mask.

She looked at him.
