Chapter 25

The technical core issue from R&D Team One was indeed challenging.

Evelyn spent two full hours resolving it.

She emailed the solution to Daniel and went to find him.

Daniel was packing his things, a relaxed smile on his face. "Time to clock out!"

Friday evening was the most anticipated moment for every office worker.

Finally, the weekend rest was within reach.

Daniel looked up and saw Evelyn. "How's the work coming along, junior?"

Evelyn was about to answer.

"Actually, no rush!" Daniel cut her off excitedly. "Just enjoy the weekend first. We can deal with anything next week."

Evelyn quietly swallowed her words.

She didn't work a regular office job often, but she knew discussing work right before Friday下班 wasn't appropriate.

Better not disturb her senior's weekend.

The task she completed was probably just a minor issue for the R&D department.

Daniel slung his bag over his shoulder and headed out. He paused beside Evelyn. "Don't be discouraged, junior. You're already very impressive."

Evelyn was a little puzzled.

She hadn't needed to do this work originally. She only did it because Jason had helped her today.

Since the work was done, she could head to the archives when she came in next week.

Thinking this, Evelyn returned to the office, picked up her "kitten," and left the company.

...

Top floor.

Alexander finished the last document and checked the time. He prepared to go home.

Thomas asked, "Boss, which residence?"

Alexander paused, realizing he hadn't asked where his grandmother was.

He called Eleanor. "Where are you... whose house?"

Eleanor's answer was unexpected. "At the hospital."

Alexander frowned. "Didn't the doctor say you could be discharged?"

"My chest started hurting again this afternoon. I want to stay a few more days. Are you coming to keep me company tonight, youguy?"

"..."

"It's fine if you don't. This old lady is all alone. My son doesn't care, my grandson doesn't love me. I'll just lie here pitifully in the hospital. No one to even fetch me a glass of water in the middle of the night, sigh~"

"...I'm on my way."

"That's more like it. Oh, and I already spoke with my granddaughter-in-law. She's coming to keep me company too. Come together, okay~"

After hanging up, Alexander rubbed his temples.

He understood his grandmother's little scheme. Whether she returned to the Vance estate or went to Evelyn's place, they would be separated at night. Staying at the hospital for company meant more time together.

But she had a boyfriend...

Alexander pressed his lips together, wanting to maintain distance.

But thinking of his grandmother's health, he suppressed his displeasure and sent her a WhatsApp: [I'll pick you up after work to go to the hospital.]

The reply came quickly: [No need. I'm already in a taxi on the way.]

She knew how to avoid suspicion.

She didn't presumptuously cling to him just because his grandmother favored her...

Alexander should have been pleased, but his inexplicable displeasure deepened.

...

Evelyn hadn't overthought it.

She just didn't want to be overly involved with Alexander before the truth about their marriage was cleared up.

This bizarre marriage was undoubtedly trouble stirred up by Alexander's side. Who would pay attention to an insignificant person like her?

Holding her little Shiba Inu, she walked straight into the inpatient building towards the VIP suites.

Not far away.

Sophia had just finished her follow-up examination.

Isabella supported her arm. Both watched Evelyn's retreating figure.

Sophia said hesitantly, "Was that Evelyn? Why is she at the hospital? Is she sick?"

Isabella felt a surge of anger.

Eleanor's hospitalization couldn't be hidden from the Vance family.

But the old woman was stubborn and refused all visitors. Even Isabella had been turned away at the door today without seeing her.

Evelyn coming now was definitely to accompany that old thing!

Her eyes flickered. "She must be visiting Mrs. Vance... Evelyn is so filial."

Hearing this, the nanny Nancy was displeased. She frowned, "Filial? I haven't seen her come visit Madam!"

Nancy was in her fifties, over a decade older than Sophia. She had taken care of Sophia personally for years, never marrying.

Sophia treated her like an older sister. Nancy held a high position in the Ashcroft family, and even Isabella was polite to her.

Sophia looked wistful. "Back at the Ashcroft residence, Evelyn had a hard life..."

Nancy immediately said, "Madam, you still speak up for her! Although I can't stand Linda's petty ways, she was right about one thing. Miss Evelyn is an ungrateful person! It's a waste that you often think of her and worry about her! She's probably forgotten all about you!"

Isabella added, "I heard Mr. Vance found her a job at the Vance Group... so she's repaying Mrs. Vance now?"

Nancy scoffed. "Madam raised her! When Linda neglected her as a child, it was Madam who fed her. Later, Madam sent her to school. The grace of upbringing is greater than heaven, yet I don't see her repaying Madam!"

Sophia stopped them. "Alright, that's enough."

But Isabella continued, "Mom has a kind heart. She never asked for回报 when helping others back then. But some people repay a drop of water with a flowing spring. Like Dr. Nan. Mom only sponsored a little money for his education. How much has he helped our family over the years? Three years ago, when the company was almost bankrupt, Dr. Nan directly gave us a technical patent that turned the crisis around..."

Nancy nodded. "Compared to that, Dr. Nan is much better than Evelyn! I wonder what Dr. Nan looks like. But one's heart is reflected in their face. He must be impressive!"

Isabella pretended curiosity. "I want to know what kind of person Dr. Nan is too, Mom. Take me with you tomorrow!"

Sophia tapped her nose with a smile. "Fine, I'll take you."

As they spoke, they went downstairs to the parking lot and left.

This scene was witnessed by Evelyn, who had just entered the VIP suite and sat on the couch by the bed.

Her gaze followed Sophia.

Sophia's face was unnaturally pale. Her figure was thin but upright, carrying a unique grace.

Isabella was saying something to her. Sophia nodded helplessly.

The mother and daughter were intimate.

Evelyn reluctantly withdrew her gaze only after the car drove away.

Turning back, she found the little old lady standing behind her. "Granddaughter-in-law, who was that? She looks very familiar."

Evelyn's expression softened. She was about to speak.

"You look so much alike..." The little old lady's eyes lit up. "I remember! She's your mother!"
