From a Low-Class Family?
Robert Vance still hoped for his cousins' support and quickly denied it. "How could that be! Your shares will definitely go to the second branch."
Elder Howard Vance then looked at Eleanor Vance.
Robert decided to lay his cards on the table. "Mom promised before that she would give shares when the younger generation gets married… Julian's wife was unfilial, so she didn't get any. Now Cecilia is marrying into the Truman family, which is a major event for our family. Mom, how many shares do you plan to give Cecilia?"
This sounded reasonable and was hard to refute.
Eleanor pressed her lips together, her brow furrowed.
After Alexander Vance tricked Robert out of two percent of the shares last time, he now controlled fifty-three percent.
If she gave more than three percent, Alexander's position in the group would be threatened.
Just as Eleanor was hesitating, Alexander spoke. "Two percent."
Consider it returning what Robert gave!
Robert immediately scoffed. "Alexander, in your eyes, is your grandmother's life only worth two percent?"
Alexander frowned.
Evelyn Ross chose that moment to speak. "Right now, we're talking about Cecilia's dowry for her marriage. What does that have to do with Grandma's life? Did Cecilia search for the medicine just for the shares? Can Grandma's life be measured in shares?"
Robert was speechless.
Richard Evans glared at Evelyn. He used to think that Alexander's wife preferred action over words. He never expected her to be so sharp-tongued.
That quiet Alexander actually married such a wife.
He glared fiercely at Julian, who was being ignored. Why didn't he open his eyes when he got married? If he had married Evelyn, she would be a great asset to the main branch now!
Robert and Richard were left speechless. Cecilia sighed slowly. "Of course, I don't mean that. I just heard that Great-Grandma's condition was worsening, so I went to beg the Truman family. But…"
She looked troubled. "I'm not after the shares. I did it for the medicine. The Truman family put in a lot of effort, and my cousin took a big risk. In the end, the Truman family promised to give three percent of the shares…"
She looked bitter. "I'm not married into the family yet. The Truman family can put in effort, but we can't ask them to pay… So I took it upon myself to say that our family would provide these shares…"
She looked timidly at Richard. "Dad, I know I shouldn't have promised shares from the Vance family, but if we miss this opportunity, there might not be any medicine…"
She lowered her head and sighed heavily.
Richard immediately declared, "You did the right thing! Since you promised, the shares must be given. These three percent will come from me! Consider it my心意 for Grandma!"
Robert said angrily, "Nonsense! You don't have many shares to begin with. If you give another three percent, how will you establish yourself in the company in the future?"
He looked directly at Eleanor. "Mom, the shares should come from you. No one should object."
Eleanor sneered.
Was this main branch putting on an act? Did they really think she was senile?
It was understandable to pay for medicine, but which family used shares to buy medicine?
It was just an excuse for the main branch to ask for shares!
Elder Howard frowned. "Cecilia, which family uses shares to buy medicine? No one would believe that if word got out!"
Cecilia immediately looked at Researcher Liam Lawrence. "My cousin is right here. Everyone can ask him."
Liam cleared his throat. "Elder, this was indeed my request. You might not know how many people in New York are fighting for this spot. There are plenty of powerful and wealthy families. Our director couldn't afford to offend anyone, so he hid and left the selection to Researcher Nora herself!"
He smiled wryly. "Everyone knows how mysterious Researcher Nora is."
Everyone nodded.
They had all tried to get medicine for the老夫人 and knew how difficult it was to see Nora! It was said that only Frank Melville had seen her in person and knew her identity.
But Frank was tight-lipped and wouldn't tell anyone who asked.
Nora was impartial and selected spots strictly based on medical records, showing no mercy.
Liam continued, "I begged Dean Frank Melville to put in a good word with Researcher Nora for this spot… In the end, Researcher Nora demanded three percent of the shares, so the conditions were this harsh."
Elder Howard immediately believed him.
Money makes the world go round.
If you couldn't get a spot, it was because you didn't offer enough money!
Three percent of the Vance Group's shares were worth hundreds of millions. Even the powerful families in New York might not be willing to part with that.
Offering such a sky-high price, probably only the Vance family in all of China would buy it!
This wouldn't affect the selection of future spots.
But Alexander frowned. He didn't think Nora was that kind of person. He had privately offered a higher price, but the other party hadn't budged.
Evelyn secretly curled her lip!
How dare Liam use her as an excuse? He simply didn't take her seriously!
She sneered, "Nora has never made such a condition. You're talking nonsense!"
Liam said helplessly, "Mrs. Vance, this condition is confidential. Besides those few families, not just anyone can know about it."
Cecilia immediately chimed in, "Aunt, there are many unwritten rules in high society. I was shocked when I heard about it too!"
Robert snorted coldly. "You come from a low-class family. How would you have the right to know these things? If you don't understand, don't interrupt!"
Alexander immediately retorted, "My grandfather's generation was also low-class. Dad, do you look down on Grandpa too?"
Robert was speechless.
Alexander sneered, "If we go back three generations, we're all from humble origins. Don't look down on people here!"
Richard scoffed, "Alexander, that's not how you should put it. Everyone looks at the present. Who asked her ancestors not to work hard? She didn't choose a good family to be born into? If she were born into one of the five major families in New York, she would have the right to hear such things!"
He glanced at Evelyn. "If you're not at that level, don't embarrass yourself here!"
Researcher Liam also laughed.
Evelyn took out her phone. "What a coincidence, I happen to know Frank Melville… Dean Frank, I'll call him right now and ask!"
She directly dialed Frank's number!
