Chapter 216

Evelyn stood outside Eleanor's hospital room.

Cecilia and Dr. Liam opened the door.

Cecilia smiled upon seeing her. "Aunt Evelyn, do you need something?"

Evelyn remained calm. "I need to speak with Grandma. Please step aside."

Cecilia's eyes flickered.

She smiled at Dr. Liam. "Dr. Liam is examining Great-Grandmother right now. It's not a good time."

"Is that so?"

Evelyn's gaze shifted to Dr. Liam.

Dr. Liam held his clipboard, feigning seriousness. "Please wait, Mrs. Vance."

Evelyn's lips curled into a cold smile.

Cecilia suddenly looked at the orchid on the balcony. "Dr. Liam, are orchids allowed in the room?"

Fiona immediately grew nervous. "That's Madam's favorite Plain Heart Orchid! She's cared for it over ten years. It's worth millions!"

A gleam flashed in Cecilia's eyes.

She remembered Mrs. Evans of New York adored orchids. This one would be perfect...

She signaled Dr. Liam with her eyes.

Dr. Liam cleared his throat. "The orchid's fragrance could interfere with the test results. It's best to remove it."

Cecilia promptly ordered the maid. "Move it to my room for now."

Fiona looked anxiously at Evelyn.

Evelyn lowered her eyes in thought.

A flower couldn't truly affect the illness. Cecilia was clearly seizing an opportunity.

But... she slightly turned away.

Letting it stay there temporarily was fine. It was still within the Vance estate.

She would deal with it after investigating Dr. Frank and Dr. Liam's connection.

Seeing Evelyn's silent consent, Fiona could only fret. "Be careful! This flower is very delicate..."

Cecilia stared greedily at the Plain Heart Orchid.

Her father was right. Pleasing Eleanor did have its rewards.

Eleanor held Vance Group shares and had substantial private assets. Even a small portion would benefit her greatly.

She scanned the bedroom.

A jade bracelet casually left on the sink. An antique pocket watch in the nightstand. Each item was incredibly valuable.

Cecilia smiled sweetly. "I'll help tidy Great-Grandmother's room. We wouldn't want Dr. Liam to accidentally break anything."

She directed the maid to remove the valuables one by one. "Store these in my room for safekeeping."

Evelyn watched her plunder with cold amusement. It was laughable.

Fiona stomped her foot in frustration. "I can safeguard Madam's belongings! There's no need to trouble you!"

Cecilia gave a gentle smile. "Housekeeper Fiona, you are an outsider. I am her actual granddaughter."

Her eyes suddenly fell on the safe in the corner.

"Dr. Liam, does the safe emit radiation? Could it affect the tests?"

Dr. Liam understood and nodded. "Metal objects can indeed interfere with EEG monitoring."

Cecilia immediately called for help. "Move the safe as well."

Fiona blocked the safe. "Miss Cecilia, enough is enough!"

Cecilia spoke righteously. "I'm only concerned for Great-Grandmother's health. Housekeeper Fiona, why are you so opposed? Do you have a guilty conscience?"

Fiona trembled with anger. "I've served Madam for thirty years! I've never taken a single thing!"

Her eyes reddened as she looked at Evelyn. "Madam, that safe contains important documents. They cannot take it."

Evelyn gently held her hand. "I know."

She turned to Cecilia. "The safe is too heavy. You can't move it."

Cecilia scoffed. "I'll call security."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, saying nothing.

Two security guards arrived quickly.

Seeing Evelyn standing near the safe, their legs went weak.

"Miss Evans," one stammered, "we can't lift this safe."

Cecilia was stunned.

Evelyn spoke calmly. "Take it yourself if you want it."

Cecilia's smile stiffened. "Since it's not a major concern, let's forget it."

Evelyn let out a soft, derisive sound.

Meanwhile, in the parking lot.

Robert and Richard rushed over.

Robert smiled obsequiously at Mr. Valentine. "Your presence honors the Vance family, Mr. Valentine."

Mr. Valentine gave a slight nod. "I heard Mrs. Ashcroft's daughter married into the Vance family. It's only right I visit Mrs. Vance and see how Evelyn is doing."

Robert and Richard's faces froze.

They exchanged a glance, sweat beading on their temples.

Mr. Valentine narrowed his eyes. "Is there a problem?"

Richard thought of his earlier insults toward Evelyn. Cold sweat poured down his back. "No problem at all! Of course... Please, this way..."

Mr. Valentine walked toward the manor casually. "Mrs. Ashcroft and I are old classmates. I'm here today to formally acknowledge Evelyn as my goddaughter."
