Sophia Ashcroft paused her steps.
She looked at Evelyn Ross, her eyes questioning.
Evelyn nodded, signaling her to follow.
The two walked toward the lounge.
Evelyn wore a champagne-colored evening gown.
She only held her phone.
Her bag and Eleanor Vance's gift were next door.
She knew Sophia would worry.
After all they had been through, she understood words alone meant nothing.
The marriage certificate was the most direct proof.
They were about to enter the lounge.
A sudden commotion came from the entrance.
Evelyn and Sophia turned simultaneously.
Alexander Vance had arrived.
He wore a black tuxedo, his posture tall and straight.
The crowd automatically parted for him.
He walked directly toward Eleanor Vance.
The elderly lady smiled and extended her hand.
Alexander did not step forward.
He bowed deeply.
"Grandmother, I wish you endless happiness and longevity."
His blessing was brief but sincere.
Eleanor's eyes reddened slightly.
She beckoned. "Come here."
Alexander remained where he stood.
"Don't worry. I will live well."
Eleanor nodded. "Your marriage is my greatest concern."
Someone nearby interjected. "I heard we might meet Mrs. Vance tonight?"
Alexander's gaze swept across the room.
He did not find Evelyn.
He withdrew his eyes.
"Yes."
The crowd immediately buzzed with discussion.
"Mr. Vance has kept her hidden for two years. Finally, he's letting her be seen."
"Whoever she is, she must be extraordinary to earn such devotion."
Eleanor beamed with joy.
"My granddaughter-in-law is both brilliant and beautiful. I am very pleased."
Everyone chimed in agreement.
"A loving marriage is the greatest blessing."
"Mr. Vance is usually so stern. He must be very gentle with his wife."
Eleanor grew even happier.
The corner of Alexander's mouth lifted slightly.
He was about to continue searching for Evelyn.
His phone suddenly rang.
It was Thomas Watson.
"Boss, Miss Sophia is here."
Alexander frowned. "Who told you to bring her?"
Thomas sounded uneasy. "She insisted on coming. I couldn't stop her."
He paused. "Are you still announcing things today? Should we postpone?"
Alexander's tone was firm. "No need."
Thomas sighed. "Miss Evelyn will be criticized again."
Alexander's eyes darkened. "She is not your concern."
He rubbed his temples. "This will make Sophia Watson give up."
Thomas responded. "Understood."
Alexander asked again. "Where is she?"
Thomas replied. "Isabella took her to change clothes."
…
Evelyn led Sophia around the corridor.
Jason Lawrence leaned against the wall.
He saw Evelyn and immediately approached.
"Dr. Nan, a word."
He lowered his voice. "What exactly is your relationship with my cousin?"
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Why do you ask?"
Jason looked serious. "The company is buzzing about you two."
Evelyn nodded. "It's true."
Jason's expression was complex. "You shouldn't do this."
He wanted to say more but held back.
Evelyn saw his concern.
She was about to explain.
Jason suddenly spoke mysteriously.
"I know who Mrs. Vance is."
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. "Who?"
Jason whispered. "Sophia Watson."
He continued. "My cousin accompanied her for treatment abroad. They just returned recently."
He looked at Evelyn. "He's formally introducing her today."
Jason spoke earnestly. "Don't make a mistake."
Evelyn was silent.
Jason thought he had persuaded her.
"Where are you going?"
Evelyn said calmly. "To show Mrs. Ashcroft my marriage certificate."
Jason was startled. "Right, you're married too."
He followed. "I want to see who your husband is."
