Evelyn finished handling the company documents at eleven.
James had a business engagement at The Ritz-Carlton.
They decided to go together.
Underground parking garage.
James held the driver's side door handle.
He hesitated and looked at Evelyn.
"Boss, are you driving?"
Evelyn raised an eyebrow.
"Problem?"
James didn't dare argue.
He resigned himself to the passenger seat.
He buckled his seatbelt.
Evelyn gripped the steering wheel with fresh excitement.
She started the engine.
The sports car's roar echoed through the garage.
James closed his eyes in pain.
The car jerked forward.
It began moving slowly.
James wished he could shrink into the seat.
So embarrassing!
Who drives a sports car at thirty miles per hour?
He turned to look at Evelyn, who was focused on driving.
"Boss, aren't we in a hurry?"
"No rush."
Evelyn kept her eyes on the road.
"It starts at twelve. Five kilometers. An hour is plenty."
James's mouth twitched.
"Boss, don't you think it's too slow?"
Evelyn said seriously, "Faster than walking. It's not the highway. I value my life. I'm afraid of accidents."
James covered his face.
He felt other cars whizzing past.
They cast curious glances his way.
He wanted to find a hole to crawl into.
The sports car's dignity shattered all along the road!
They finally arrived at The Ritz-Carlton's parking lot.
Evelyn got out and stretched.
"Haven't driven in a while. Feels good."
Seeing James hadn't moved, she walked to the passenger side and opened the door.
"Mr. Klein, not coming down?"
James's mouth twitched.
He took the car keys.
"I have an appointment with a client at eleven-thirty. I'll go ahead."
He hurried toward the stairs.
Evelyn waited leisurely for the elevator.
Suddenly, someone spoke.
"Evelyn Ross?"
Evelyn turned around.
Her university classmate, Jeremy Brown, stood nearby waiting for the elevator.
Jeremy Brown looked at her, his eyes wide with shock.
"It really is you!"
Evelyn nodded.
"Hello."
Jeremy Brown seemed surprised.
Evelyn had outstanding looks and was once the school belle.
But she was reclusive and rarely interacted with others.
Now her eyes held a spark.
The change was so great Jeremy Brown didn't recognize her at first.
Jeremy Brown glanced at the sports car in the parking lot.
"Haven't found a job yet? It's been almost two months since graduation."
Evelyn was taken aback.
"Huh?"
Jeremy Brown pointed at the sports car.
"I just saw you get out. Are you working as a driver?"
Evelyn: ?
She was about to explain when Jeremy Brown spoke first.
"I got into an amazing company. Guess who the leader is?"
Evelyn shook her head.
Jeremy Brown smiled.
"It's Dr. Nan! Surprised?"
Evelyn was indeed surprised.
"What?"
Jeremy Brown pointed at the sports car.
"That was your last ride, right? You missed a great opportunity. The gentleman just now is Mr. Klein, the company's head. But the real boss is actually Dr. Nan!"
Jeremy Brown puffed out his chest with pride.
"Everyone in the new energy field knows Dr. Nan! I've been at the company for two months. Just reading the internal materials has taught me so much."
Evelyn nodded along.
"Oh, oh."
Jeremy Brown looked her over.
"Evelyn, jobs are hard to find this year. Your major was good. Want me to refer you?"
Evelyn kept a low profile in university.
Few knew about her relationship with Isabella.
Most classmates were simple and sympathetic toward those struggling.
Sensing Jeremy Brown's goodwill, she smiled.
"Thank you, but no need."
Jeremy Brown was dazzled by her smile.
He scratched his head sheepishly.
"The company is hard to get into, but I can try to refer you. Don't be shy. Referrals among classmates are common."
The elevator arrived.
